About Me

Hima Hassenruck-Gudipati is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Sustainability at Southern Oregon University. Her work centers on how landscapes respond to a changing world. Her recent work focused on sediment transport across floodplains and shallow lakes. Before her current position, Hima worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (UMN). Hima holds a Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of Texas, Austin, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Geology from Caltech.

Hima’s research is centered on landscapes that most would consider flat. However, these landscapes are anything but flat: small changes in elevation can drive the movement of water, sediment, and solutes. These landscapes are prone to flooding and drought associated with climate change. Hima’s interests especially include community-centered and place-based research. At UMN, she was a part of the Kawe Gidaa-naanaagadawendaamin Manoomin/Psiη (First we must consider Manoomin/Psiη/wild rice) collaborative at the University of Minnesota.

Hima was raised in both Germany and the US with family spread across the US, Germany, and India. Therefore, finding and building community is important to her. Throughout her career, she has held leadership positions to build networks of support in her professional and local communities, including at the AGU EPSP Student Committee and as a faculty-student liaison in the Jackson School of Geosciences at UT Austin. Outside of academia, Hima enjoys spending time with her dog, hiking, and climbing.
